Hi Perry,
Did what you said but now I can't start the Ubuntu Guest.
Rechecked the item
Still unable to start the Ubuntu Guest.
This is what I am seeing:
Black screen with "Fatal: could not read from boot medium! system halted".
I then go to close that window and get the option to
"power off machine with restore snapshot 10"
I choose this option ( or choose to power off and Don't check the restore snapshot 10) and get a long error text with the last line being
(VERR_ALREADY_EXISTS)
Perry, I'm going to try to restart the Guest desktop a couple of more times, but at this point because nothing seems to be working, do you think it would be better to wipe everything and start over ? ? ?
After install of new everything
sudo -i
password
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
after this type in reboot
open terminal again
sudo -i
password
apt-get install dkms
apt-get install linux-headers-generic
apt-get install build essential
then the install guest additions
would this be the correct order ?

This is correct. But are you sure that this is not the 64 bit of Ubuntu?
The last few statements you send it sounds like it is the 64-bit version.
If it is then you would need to install the amd64 guest additions.

Well, first off, I got the Ubuntu guest restarted - the disk location was missing - I'm sure something I did trying to solve this Guest Additions problem too late last night.
Now, you are going to hate me for this.
You are right, I installed the
64 bit Ubuntu as a Guest !
I guess I should have realized after trying to install the Guest Additions the first time and in the Terminal it read on the second to last line:
"Detected unsupported amd64 environment (- I had previously tried to run a Ubuntu 64 bit Guest - didn't work)"
I guess I was wrong and it did work and the next time I tried to install a 32 bit - that install didn't work ! !
So, what I did:
sudo -i <press enter>
password <press enter>
(which by the way, the password itself, doesn't show in the Termainal as you type - this took me awhile to figure out the first time)
Opened the Disk icon on Guest desktop - dragged the 64 bit version into the termainal <press enter>
After everything loads
typed Reboot <press enter>
So, it seems everything would have worked the first time if I had correctly told you I was using a 64 bit version. Very sorry.
Well, I have to say, I hope I don't need your help again but THANK YOU for all the help this time !

Well...
My english isn't good, but i think that this post miss something very important!!!. Your network's Adapter in the devices, how do you configure it?. If you use other than bridge adaptor, i doubt it very seriously that is going to work!.
You have to make ping to both sides. To the guest over the host and to the host over the guest.
I made that and it's works like a charm!.
I subscribe and put this message only because i spend 4 hours trying this thing works and if was that, the network adapter.
I'm using windows 7 ultimate running sun virtual box and linux ubuntu 9.10 running on it.

Perryg,
I am fairly familiar with the process and not exactly a noob. However, I am having one small issue after getting the VBox addition installed in Ubuntu9.10. First a little background.
I am running a dual proc intel 4gig win7 x64 host with 2 video cards and 3 monitors also running VBOX 3.1.6. I have a vm running OpenSol 2009.02 and another vm running Sol10u8. They run fine, actually pretty darn stable. The third is Ubuntu 9.10. Yes it is installed and updates have been installed. So now to the nitty gritty.
After the installation of the VBox addition in Ubuntu9.10 and a reboot, I have lost the ability to use the mouse and keyboard in the GUI. It is completely un-responsive. It is fine through the login then un-responsive.
Any ideas? Your knowledge and help is appreciated o' guru ;->
Update: mouse does eventually show a result after a very looooooooooong pause still acts very un-responsive. Kyb is not responsive.

@nameerfdom,
First thing to check is that you do not have a filter set in the USB section of the guest that is related to the mouse and keyboard. These are a shared resource and can not be assigned to the guest through the USB settings.
Then from the host terminal/command windows VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.
And finally post the log file for the guest (as an attachment)

perryg,
Thanks for your reply. I will post that in a moment. I found this when I logged in via the xterm and drilled down to the /usr/lib/VBoxGuestAdditions to manually uninstall the Guest Additions. I can confirm that I did do the updates and upgrades and that this is installed. I will post the log in a moment that this is referring to.

Update: Sorry Perryg, I think this was because I didn't do this via sudo xterm so the rerunning this again via sudo.

Perryg,
Ok here is what i have done. It is working somewhat now after these things. I have to Right-ctrl to get out or in session.
boot and login to the xterm and sudo -i
cd /usr/lib/VBoxGuestAdditions
vboxadd setup
Did this to make sure it installed correctly.
Next:
type <shutdown now> to get to the "Repair" screen
selected the repair and/or update/upgrade
it went through and downloaded some more items and did install/repair
<shutdown now>again
turned box off from the Machine menu
Next may seem unimportant:
while the box is off i ran
vboxmanage modifyvm --vtxvpid off
vboxmanage modifyvm --nestedpaging off
(as neither of these are required based on the type of Hardware i'm using)
restarted the box and now I can mouse around and type without issue. However, I have to Right-Ctrl to get in and out of session or mouse click in the window to get in session.
SO here are the big ?'s
Did the repair fix the guest to the point that the VBox addition are no longer in effect?
Do I need to reinstall the VBox Additions or should I attempt to?
Ideas? as always your knowledge and help are appreciated o' guru.

The mouse issue you are having is due to the fact that the guest additions are not install or at least did not install properly.
First thing to do is make sure that you have the build-essential and kernel-headers installed for your kernel. Then install the guest additions again and watch for errors.
Make sure to do this as SUDO.

ok I do this again. I did have those installed watching for errors. I can certainly do it again.
Ok, No errors on the install. Rebooting now.

Ok same issue but now with a new twist. If I click the maximize button so the system goes full screen with the tool bars and menu bar it will click respond on what I last clicked on. If I click on something and no response then click the window resize and take it out of maximize what I clicked on appears. Interesting.
And I get this when I resize occasionally.

Ok Found the Issue i think!
It has to do with the fact that I have been running multiple monitors on 2 VDU's. I moved the startup window for the guest to the primary monitor labeled/identified as 1 for windows. Everything started working. Odd. I would think it would not matter though. ??
Perryg, thanks.
To all,
The installation techniques derived here on this forum do work. Perryg has done a fantastic job with it.
Do the install steps, watch for errors.
