Hi Perry - thank you for all of your help so far.

Went thru the set up fine this time - answering the few [y/n] questions with a "Y".

At the end in the Terminal there was:

"verifying archive integrity . . . All good.

virtualBox guest additions installer

Detected unsupported amd64 environment (- I had previously tried to run a Ubuntu 64 bit Guest - didn't work)

root@Danny-laptop-UBUNTU:~#"

Everthing seems good Except I can't resize the window - that is why I have been trying to install Guest additions.

There is a choice in

Machine > "auto resize guest display" - it has a really small 'check' on it

What do I need to do or check to see that Guest Additions are installed properly ?

Perryg wrote:Just start over with the commands I sent you. Ubuntu will only install what it needs. What ever you have already installed it will tell you it is installed and go on.
Really don't make too much about this.. Just follow the instructions I sent to the letter. It pretty much takes care of the rest for you.

Hello Perry,

Hope you are still willing to help with this issue once you are online.

Please read previous post for current (ongoing) issue - thanks !

Additionally, (just to let you know) today while in firefox the update manager (ubuntu update manager ?) had 14 updates to install. I installed them and the Guest Ubuntu screen size seemed to go from 1/4 size (before update install) to a larger 1/2 screen size (of Host screen).

Plus, I was reading another post with a similiar type of issue to mine - not being able to resize Guest screen to match Host size screen. You suggested the same fix in that other post as you have suggested to me except you also suggested doing:

Apt-get dkms

Should I try this or am I having some other type of issue ?

Again, thanks - Danny

Yes you can install dkms. It will help you keep your image and headers synced as well as automatically recompile the VBox Kernel module.
The update that you experienced more then likely had a kernel image update and you will need to run sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup in terminal.
To test the auti-resize all you need to do is press the host+g toggle and then host+f and to go to full screen and out. If not then press the host+g toggle a second time and then host+f for full screen.

Perry,

Installed the dkms in the terminal

sudo get-apt install dkms and then pressed enter

it installed.

Problem still remains.

When I press host + g in the Guest desktop - nothing happens. I then verify this by going to "Machine" > "auto resize guest display" - there is a small 'check' or if I press host+g again the check goes away - so I assume that feature is working ?

I then do varies combos of host + g and host + f. The only thing that happens is the Guest desktop stays the same but the surronding window around the Guest desktop goes black.

Could this have something to do with my Guest Display resolution (System > Display) - top resolution is only 800 x 600 and no way to change it that I can see ?

Also, just making sure, I should run in the Terminal sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup because of the previous mentioned 14 updates (the updates seemed to help a little with the screen size).

UPDATE -
Perry - I just tried to run this in the Terminal sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup . I tried it with a space before "setup" and No space before "setup. Each time the response was - "command not found"

Man, thanks for sticking with this, I hope we are making progress but right now it doesn't feel like it.

Thank you - Danny

Then you do not have the guest additions installed.

Start again from here
  • Start the Ubuntu guest.
    Open a terminal and type sudo -i <press enter>
    Enter your password <press enter>
  • Now look up at the top left of the VBox window and click devices then click install guest additions.
  • If they do not show on the desktop then click devices and unmount CD, then click install guest additions again.
  • At this point they should be on your desktop. Dbl click to open the CD.
  • Look for the Linux Guess Additions that fits you install. More than likely the VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
  • Position the terminal windows and the opened file system to where you can see them both.
  • Click and drag the right additions file and drop it on the terminal window.
  • Click on the terminal window to get focus and hit enter.

Watch for any errors that show and when they are complete reboot.
Let me know if you encounter any errors. If all is well you use the click drag to make the window bigger or use the host+F toggle to go in and out of full screen

Hi Perry,

Did what you said -

Start again from here
Start the Ubuntu guest.
Open a terminal and type sudo -i <press enter>
Enter your password <press enter>
Now look up at the top left of the VBox window and click devices then click install guest additions.

Did the above but just wanted to say that the icon, a Disk labeled ("VBOXADDITIONS_3."), was on my Guest desktop already - from following your directions last time.

If they do not show on the desktop then click devices and unmount CD, then click install guest additions again.

Didn't have to do this - Disk already on Guest desktop

At this point they should be on your desktop. Dbl click to open the CD.
Draged and Dropped into the Terminal "VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run"
This is the line that showed up in the Terminal after DragDrop:
'/media/cdrom0/VBoxLinux/Additions-x86.run'

pressed Enter

This line was the second to last line to show up in the Terminal after pressing Enter

Detected unsupported amd64 environment

After this, I put in the Terminal

Reboot

Rebooted fine but still not able to resize the Guest Desktop using Host+F

Post the log file (as attachment) Location is the main VBox GUI under Machine show log.

Also: From the host terminal/command windows VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details --machinereadable and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

Under Machine is

"Session Information Dialog" (Host N)

I do not see "show log".

In the small window that opens when I click on "Session Information Dialog" there are two tabs

Details and the second tab is Runtime

Details shows

IDE Primary Master: Ubuntu 32 bit.vdi (Normal, 8.00 GB)

IDE Secondary Master: VBoxGuestAdditions.iso (28.39 MB)

Runtime shows

Screen Resolution: 800x600x32

Guest Additions: Not Detected

Not sure exactly what you need or how to post a log file (as attachment).

Very willing to learn and post

You also asked for a log file from the "Host" - how do I do this ? ? Do you mean the "RUN" window in the Windows 7 start menu ?

and would the line be

VBoxManage showvminfoUbuntu""32""bit--details --machinereadable

Useing 2 "" for a space.

Perry - sorry, looking in the wrong place.

I see the log now

There are 4 tabs

VBox.log
Ubuntu 32 bit-2010-03-25-17-09-54.log
VBox.log
(60.03 KiB) Downloaded 11 times
I think I have figured out how to post these logs ("Upload attachment" - under this window, while editing)

VBox.log1
Ubuntu 32 bit-2010-03-25-16-18-54.log
VBox.log.1
(58.96 KiB) Downloaded 8 times
VBox.log2

VBox.log3

Please let me know

Are you sure that you have the 32 bit version of Ubuntu installed?
In the guest settings look under system -> acceleration tab and take the check mark out of VT-x/AMD-v and see if it will let you finish the guest additions install.
