Does 3D Acceleration work at all with a Linux guest?

I have VBox 3.1.4 on a 2009 iMac Core 2 Duo box, running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. My box has 4 gigabytes real memory and a 500 gigabyte hard drive.
Virtual machine is PCLinuxOS-2010. Any attempt to boot the Linux guest crashes it if 3D Acceleration is checked.
Does it work at all? Should I go to an older version of VBox (3.1.2?). What VBox options work well together? I have PAE/NX and VT-X enabled.
