cannot get started. failed to initialize COM

I get stuck right from the onset. Cannot even get started!!
I downloaded and installed version 3.1.4
I follow the instructions and start virtualbox.
I get the message
Failed to initialize COM or to find the VirtualBox COM server. Most likely, the VirtualBox server is not running or failed to start.
The application will now terminate.

Not much I can do.
Can anyone provide sensible help??
