Do you have your VM set up to use more than one CPU?

Hello,

I've got the same problem. This is a new iMac running OS X 10.6.2 with VirtualBox 3.1.4.

I am trying to install Windows XP SP2 in a new virtual machine and during the first reboot of the machine the iMac bails out with a kernel panic.

About your question, I have two cpus assigned to the virtual machine, as the Mac is equipped with a i7 cpu I thought I could afford "loosing" two cores to the guest system in the virtual machine.

Lets have a look what happens when I reduce the number of cores to one.

Was worth a shot. There have been similar postings on the VMWare forums and they claim it has something to do with having more than one CPU allocated to a VM. Guess that didn't turn out to be the case for you.

I also saw some postings that believed that the RAID card may be involved. Have you checked on Apple's website to see if they have any software or firmware updates for the RAID card you have installed?

Something else you may check. When I first got my Mac Pro, I was getting panics about once a day while running VirtualBox. After opening up the case, and removing and then reseating the RAM and Video card, the panics went away. So you may try that to see if it works for you. It couldn't hurt.

Have you tried disabling PAE/NX and VT-X? The combination of the two was causing kernel panics on my brand new iMac. I was pretty bummed thinking it had something to do with my new system (brought it down literally twice the first day I had it), but it turns out others are having this problem with the new virtualbox. I was able to boot fine using EITHER PAE/NX or VT-X but not both. Since I'm not giving the virtual machine much ram I figured I'd disable PAE/NX, the machine is currently working fine using just VT-X.

Hey can someone help me? I am running OSX as a guest (obviously), and attempting to install the Sound driver for VM so I can actually HEAR with OSX. It installs fine, but if I try to reboot....at all, I get a kernal panic. On boot up, I still cannot hear sound. I have it set to Null. Advice? It is running on 3 Processor cores and 3Gb of RAM.

Here is what I found. :P

@john.doe,
Please read http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=31104
Plus you have posted in the OSX host forum which is not what you profile states.
