VirtualBox running CentOS 5.4 64-bit MAC OS X 10.6.2

I apologize if this topic has been covered. I can't seem to find any answers. It seems everyone has a different opinion, or none of the solutions worked for me. I have just installed VirtualBox 3.1.4 on my MAC and I'm trying to set up a CentOS 5.4 virtual machine. I have a Macbook Pro, purchased in November of 2009. There a few things which I've learned since starting this last night.
1. Hardware Virtualization - How do I see if my OS supports hardware virtualization and/or how do I enable it?
2. My machine has a Core 2 Duo P8700 processor. Does the processor support hardware virtualization?
3. I've run the MacCPUID utility and everything seems to check out.
No matter what I try, I get the following error message upon starting CentOS:
"Your cpu does not support long mode. Please use 32bit version."
Someone help before I pull out all of my hair...
