Dead keys for a Windows XP guest in an OS X host

Hi,
I've been using VirtualBox successfully for about a year now using various host/guest combinations, and I'm very happy with it.
The only thing I haven't been able to do so far is the following: pass dead keys from an OS X host to a Windows XP guest, in order to type accented characters into a Windows-only application using my US keyboard (such as Alt-e + e => é). I'm using the normal US keyboard setting for the guest OS, is that the problem? If so, which other one should I pick?
Thanks in advance for any information!
