Installation Help for Tiger

Post by jlvkfyang »

I am running Mac OS X 10.4.11, and just downloaded Virtualbox v.3.1.4. When I go to install it I am getting this error:

"The installer has detected an unsupported operation system. VirtualBox runs on Mac OS X 10.5 and higher only."

What version, if any supports Tiger?

I am looking to run either Windows XP or Vista so that I can run an accounting program. I have bootcamp on my system, but rebooting from one OS to another is starting to get old.

Thanks a bunch.

The message pretty much sums it all up. You need to have Mac OS X 10.5 or higher.

Not sure what else to tell you.

Is there an older version of virtualbox that will run on Tiger? Documentation for the current version is deceiving because Tiger is listed as a compatible OS.

[2] Preliminary Mac OS X support (beta stage) was added with VirtualBox 1.4, full support with 1.6. Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) support was removed with VirtualBox 3.1.

See if one of these will work. http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_3_0

Success!! XP installed without a hitch. Ran all guest additions. Thanks for all the help.

One more question though, how can I get the wireless to work on the XP side? Built in NIC is working, but not wireless.

Running a Apple 15-inch: 2.4GHz MacBook Pro (Tiger).

You should be able to setup a second adapter and select the wlan as an option.
That way you should be able to connect with either.

I received a request for instructions on how I did my install. I will do my best to describe, and if anyone with more familiarity would like to add other tips for virtualbox newbies, please do so constructively.

Software Information:
Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11
Virtualbox 3.0.12 (3.1 does not support Tiger anymore. 3.0.12 is the last version to support it)
Windows XP Pro (I would assume any Windows install will be similar)

1. Download and install VB 3.0.12.
2. Run VB and click on the New button. A wizard will pop up.
3. Name your Virtual machine, and choose your OS and OS Version. ie. Microsoft Windows, Windows XP. This is important because the default settings are different for different VM OS's. Click Next.
4. You will be asked to choose a base memory size. Depending on how much physical memory your machine has, you should stick to the default, as the VM will actually be sharing that with your host machine. XP default is 192, but I changed mine to 256mb, my machine has 2gb of RAM. Click Next.
5. You will be asked to create a new hard disk. Do so, as you shouldn't have any old ones on there. Click Next.
6. Hard disk wizard will pop up. Click Next.
7. Choose storage type, I chose dynamic. Read and figure out which setting works best for you. Click Next.
8. Choose a Virtual Disk location and size. Default is 10gb, I chose 25gb for my XP install. Click Next, click finish.
9. A VM will appear in your VB window. Choose it and click start.
10. A first run wizard will pop up, click next.
11. Choose your boot device usually a cd/dvd rom device and the host drive is the default cd/dvd drive. Click next.
12. Make sure your Windows cd is in the drive specified and click finish.
13. Your VM will boot up, and follow the prompts for a normal windows install.
14. Once windows is installed, you will need to install the guest additions.
15. With your VM running, click on devices, and choose unmount CD/DVD.
16. Click on devices again and click on install guest additions. This will install drivers needed, allow you to share folders between your host OS and VM OS, go full screen, and other tools you may need.
17. Enjoy.

Please post any other tips you may have for newbies like me.

You shouldn't restrict yourself to such a small virtual disk. Because you chose dynamic for the storage type, the virtual disk will only use as much space as it needs, so you could choose 250GB and it would still only use 10GB if that's all that the guest needs. That way you won't be coming back later asking how you go about expanding the size of your virtual disk.
