Difficulties installing RedHat 5.2 on 3.1.4 r5764

Greetings, all...

I know the distro is really old, but I have a need to set up a test box with it to mimic an installed system at a remote location. That said, I'm running SLES 10 as host, and at the point where packages begin to install, I get an error (for each package):

Code: Select all

RPM install of setup failed:
package setup-1.9.2-1 is for
a different architecture
This, of course, continues ad nauseum after pressing OK.

I realize that the packages are i386, and I haven't installed RH 5.2 on anything more modern than a PII, so, I honestly can't tell whether it's a real error or whether the installer is just getting confused by something in the virtual BIOS.

Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.

TIA

Using the same installation media (iso), running VB 3.0.6 r52128 on 32-bit XP, the installation went off without a hitch. Red Hat 5.2 has a 2.0 kernel, BTW.

The original host is/was a Proliant DL360 G3 with dual Xeons; the current Windows box is an Intel DP45SG board, with a single Core2 Quad on it.

I wonder what changed between versions or how the host hardware might make a difference in this case?

the DL360 G3 Xeon is a P4 netburst type CPU and is really "more modern" than the newer Core2 Quad which is a descendant of the Pentium Pro, PII, PIII line via the Pentium M mobile CPU

I am also running into the same road block installing this version. Upon looking closer at the documentation, I see that the Linux kernel support even for 2.2 is limited, and Red Hat 5.2 uses the very old 2.0 kernel. Therefore, I'm not really expecting to get success with this, but I'd be greatly interested if someone eventually finds a way to make this work. Until then, my nostalgia will have to bide its time, or go searching online auctions for some very old hardware. :)

Did you ever figure out a way to get this to work?
