New XP machine won't start

I am running Mac 10.6.2 on a Dell D620. That Mac OS runs wonderfully. I have Windows XP Pro and a Puppy Linux hosts in VirtualBox 3.1.4 that both run wonderfully.
I have created a virtual disk from an image of my work laptop that I would like to run as a VB guest. The image was created with O&O DiskImage 5 Pro and converted from its native .omg format to .vhd. I have copied the .vhd to the HardDisks folder on the Mac host. I create the new machine and point to the vhd as its drive. Configured all other applicable settings.
When I start this new machine I get the Windows text screen indicating that Windows did not start successfully. I have the options of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt or Start Windows Normally. No matter which entry is selected, it just hangs after the bar graph advances from left to right.
I have deleted and recreated the machine several times. I have not used a vhd before in VB, so I don't know if I've overlooked anything.
Thanks!
