[SOLVED] No sound in Windows NT 4.0 guest.

Post by ppgrainbow »

I'm having a problem getting the sound to work under Windows NT 4.0 guest. On Windows 2000 host running VirtualBox 1.5.6, going into the audio settings for Windows NT 4.0, the only two options available are the Null Audio Driver and Windows Direct Sound. The sound is operating off of a Insignia NS-NBSPK2 notebook speaker and Windows 2000 identifies it as a USB Audio Device when clicking on the Volume icon in the system tray. Here's a screen for further details:
Audio settings for Windows NT 4.0 guest.

Now, going into the Windows NT 4.0 guest I opened up the Control Panel, selected Multimedia and then Devices. When I attempted to add the Creative Labs Sound Blaster 1.x, Pro 16 card by setting the I/O Address to 220, I wound up with this error message as described in this second screenshot:

The error message is telling me that the sound card could not be found with the selected port number and it's telling me to check my settings and try again.

Is there a why how I can get the sound card to work under Windows NT 4.0 guest?

Set to soundblaster and use I/O=330, IRQ=5, DMA=1 and see if will work.

I checked the settings and the Creative Labs Sound Blaster driver and only lists I/O Addresses in the range of 210 to 280 and none of them worked. :(

I had to open an XP guest to find out but that is what is being used with the soundblaster emulator. Maybe you can change that with setextradata. I have no clue what to put in but maybe someone else will. Also if memory serves, I never used sound on NT 3.51 or 4.0 as I used then as servers and didn't need the sound. Even so I remember that I could configure the I/O's I just don't remember exactly how at the moment. I will see if I can dust off the memory banks and see

That would be fair enough. Even attempting to reinstall VB 1.5.6 with USB support didn't work either, btw.

How can I change the setextradata to detect sound in Windows NT 4.0? I did manage to get the sound working in Windows NT 3.51 under Virtual PC 2004 SP1, btw. :D

I managed to solve the no sound issue under Windows NT 4.0 guest.

I had to upgrade VirtualBox to version 1.6.6 with the Orca hack to allow it to work under Windows 2000. VB 2.0.x to 2.0.10 would install okay, but attempting to start a VM throws a error log and versions 2.1.x and later would causes MSI installer to fail.

Anyways, there was support for the audio controller. I had to enable SoundBlaster 16 emulation and Windows Direct Sound as the host driver. From there, I reinstalled the guest additions as well as the SoundBlaster drivers and everything works fine now! :D
