I beat my head into wall for about 3 days trying to get a legal 98 installed as guest on Ubuntu. The installer would hang, and after a 12 hours install, it ran like the machine was a 6 mhz 8088, running windows 98.
I then installed windows 2000 on machine as guest (after buying larger 10 gig ext hd.). It runs okay, but boot time is long.
(Installing guest additions as I type to increase color and resolution of 2000.) 1.7 gig hd space, but takes 2 gig free to install. Now, I should have voice recognition and full ahk, bbe on the machine.
Then, for fun, I installed xp on same machine. Took 3 gigs had and needs 6 gig free for install. Interestingly, if boots in expected 4 minutes and is more responsive than 2000--actually quite responsive. Probably, just as good as running xp on the bare machine.
Why is this interesting, you ask. Because this is on 600 ghz pentium 3 with 512 meg of ram. I was told to forget it.
I really like the pause of the machine. I think with qemu, you can just shut down the machine, saving the state (a hibernation of sorts.) When I switch back to host, ubuntu, I would just pause the main machine and continue with ubuntu aps, like there was no XP running.
Of course, it is too early to tell what pitfalls will come. (rebooting into win2k is taking forever after applying guest additions, including experimental direct x. It doesn't look good. May have killed the virtual os. )

Re: Success report
Before installing the guest additions, the boot was 7 minutes. It now is hanging on the boot for last 20 minutes, after installing the additions. I see the hd light blink, slowly.
Ahh, after about 25 minutes, win2k booted with a better resolution and color. Seems more responsive. Hope next boot goes better.

Re: Success report
win2k boots in about ten minutes on vb. xp in 4 flat.
That xp number is excellent since on my 3 ghz 1 gig ram desktop, it takes at least five and a half.
