This is for discussing general topics about how to use VirtualBox.

Making network between 2 VMs on 2 different machines!

Post by Androggles »

Hello

I have this problem that i dont know how to make a network between my twt VM's, if it is even possible. I got 2 computers connected to the same network, running a Windows Server 2008 on one of them, and a Windows XP on the other. But i canøt seem to get the two computers on the network, they can get to the Internet, but not on local network.

I could realy need some help?

Thank you

What doesn't seem to work? are the VM's getting proper ip addresses? with Bridge each VM is like a separate PC on your Lan.

The VMs can't connect to each other, they can't even ping... :?

My two guests (Server2003 and XP Pro) are setup using Internal Network and my Server2003 guest has a second network adaptor setup using Nat.
I don't need my XP guest to access the internet.

Maybe you should read some tutorials about what a LAN is, how a router works and what a router does for your LAN. Connecting 2 pc's or bridged VM's(even across 2 hosts) is really a piece of cake, you must be missing something obvious.

So it looks like i have starting womthing hard :P So would it be easier to run both VM's on just one real machine? And if so, how do i make a lan here?

I actually have this same issue.

Running Debian Lenny on two different PCs. And then on each PC, I'm running a VM (Debian Lenny). The VMs can ping either PC and either PC can ping either VM. BUT the VMs can't ping each other. Frustrating.

Yes, on the same network. No, no firewall.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

I can only point you to what vbox4me2 wrote. There is nothing magical about virtual networks. If you are using bridged networking, all of the machines, physical or virtual, are in the same network as far as the networking software is concerned. The software has no way to tell which machines are physical and which are virtual. It only sees the machine's IP address and/or its hardware (MAC) address. If you have a network problem, use normal network debugging tools.

Yes, having both vms on the same host makes things easier. If the vms are on separate hosts, they can only communicate through the physical network which connects the host machines. If you use bridged networking all machines, physical and virtual, are in the same network and it should all work. Anything else gets very tricky.

If the vms are on the same host, you have plenty of options. If all you need is for the vms to see each other you can use an internal network. Connecting both vms to the internal network is like plugging two machines into a switch/hub which is not connected to anything else. They see each other but that is it. If you want to include the host in the network, use the host-only network. The vms are now in the same network as each other and the host.
