CD/DVD Read Speeds Extremely Slow?

Post by walakazoo »

I have VirtualBox 3.1.4 running on SL 10.6.2 and I'm running Windows XP as my guest OS. It seems to run OK but I'm having trouble with CD/DVD reading. This is on a 20" iMac with SuperDrive: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875.

I setup the IDE Controller to share the host drive and turned on the "passthrough" option. I also installed the Guest Additions (not sure if that makes a difference for CD/DVD reading?) I put a DVD containing backed up files in and could see it via an explorer window and could copy files off of it at would seemed like a decent rate (not fast but workable). So that seems fine.

But when I try to put a CD in and rip it with dBpoweramp or put a DVD in and rip it with DVDFab, it doesn't seem to work. Both programs seem to pick up the drive and recognize the disks but it's so slow neither can get anywhere with the rips. I watch via the Session information box and the DMA/PIO Transfers don't climb very fast and the Data Read is moving up really slowly or sometimes not at all when I try to do these.

Any ideas why this isn't working?
Thanks.

AFAIIK, audio CD ripping is not yet supported by VirtualBox, only data CDs.

As far as video DVDs, I would imagine the same holds true.

I am seeing the same thing.

i use AnyDVD + cloneDVD to backup my DVDs to ISOs. In earlier versions 3.1.2 for instantance a DVD used to take between 12-15 minutest to be backed up. in the 3.1.4 it takes three times longer. 35 -45 minutes to backup a DVD. ridiculous.

I have even bought to new drive assuming it was a hardware of a sata cable issue. no difference.

I have my primary Vdi as the ide primary master. I have tried to use both ide primary slave and ide secondary master for dvd drive. no difference.
