failed 98 install

Post by degarb »

I installed 98 with host ubuntu, on external usb drive (ext4). The install appeared to go okay, but then at end just hung.

Rebooting only hangining. I can hear some ticking, like drive is getting written to or read from about every second, but that is about it.

Is there some trick? Using the search produces squat. I forced a kill of the guest. then made sure both acpi were enabled, the second one was not. But reboot is hanging as well.

I didn't get as far as having a desktop. Anyway, what you are saying is it will run very slowly. Probably no good enough for human interaction.

Maybe, I can buy some windows 2000 copy. The specs aren't much ahead of 98. I just don't think I could get xp to run well on this limited machine as a guest.

On limited machines with 1 GB or less or ATOM CPUs or less it makes no sense to use virtualization.

In this case dual boot is the only usefull solution.

A commonly encountered problem is that if you boot a Win98 VM with a CD still mounted then it hangs during the boot (or even causes a VBox crash). Is your setup CD still mounted?
