[FIXED] Help migrating a real windows machine to virtual

Post by [ Xi0N ] »

I think this will be a great challenge:
I have a really old server using windows 2000 service pack 4, whose hardware has become faulty and problematic, and that i cannot remove, because sometimes it may be used: So, i decided to make a virtual image of the hard disk and boot a virtual machine in case we need to take a lookto what is inside of it...

Anyway, i followed this how-to http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows
First, i installed ubuntu from windows in a different disk than the system.
Them, i booted ubuntu, and copyed the whole system's disk (not only the partition of the system, but the two partitions that were in the very same disk)
i did: dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/shared/image.dd

Then, i converted the image to vdi format as said in the how-to :BoxManage convertfromraw ImageFile.dd OutputFile.vdi

Once the process ended, i created a new virtual machine, with windows 2000 as configuration, and i checked the "Enable IO APIC" option

I get to see the boot options, and the windows 2000 initial loading screen, and suddenly, i get a BSOD with the message: "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" - and i am told to do chkdsk /f.... but i tryed and did not fix anything....

If i try to restore the system with the install cd, i get some errors on restoring some files....... What else can i try to make the system finally end booting up? Didn't i do the disk image properly or something?

Thanks!

Boote dup a windows 2000 sp4 and follow the setup as if i were going to install to an empty disk (DOnt choose the repair option in the initial screen)
Then, when you are about to start the install, the setup will realize the version of windows that is already in the disk: At this point, is when you should choose the repair option.

Working, no more BSOD :D
