Upgrade beyond 3.0.10 loses USB support

Post by oao »

I am running XP32 as a guest in VirtualBox with the XP64 as a host.

The last version that worked just fine was 3.0.10.

I made 2 attempts to upgrade to 3.1.2 and 3.1.4 and in both cases I lost USB support and thus access to my HP printer and USB drives.
No matter what I did they were not recognized or I would get errors when trying to activate them. After that I would not be able to save the VM, only to shut down, Rebooting the VM would run into same problem.

When I downgraded back to 3.0.10, the USB access came back.

Please advise. Thanks.

Your profile indicates that you are running the OSE version of VirtualBox. The OSE version does not support USB.

But you said that in version 3.0.10, you had USB support, so this must have been the PUEL version.

When you upgraded to 3.1.2 and 3.1.4, are you sure that you installed the PUEL version? How did you install these versions, by downloading from the VB website?

hhhmm, have no reason to believe i installed the ose version.

whn i opened vbox i got a pop notification that a new version was available. i pasted the link in that pop into my browser and it downloaded the new version.

since i was running 3.0.10 publ, why would the update link download the ose?

what do you mean by ose in profile -- could I see that profile?

Yes, just look to the right hand side of the screen next to one of your posts, underneath your username.

That's weird.

1st, I see no reason why the update link downloaded the OSE version. Indeed, I went back and downloaded the PUEL version of 3.1.4 and compared it to the one I had upgraded with and they are identical.

2nd, the profile is OSE even though I went back to 3.0.10 and does have USB support.

So the question is how can the profile show OSE even though I run PUEL? And why does the upgrade loses the USB and the downgrade regains it?

Your profile is only going to show what you tell it to show.

Ah, OK, then that was my mistake when I created it. I corrected it but note that there is no Windows xp 64 for the host OS, so I selected Windows XP.

So we're back to square 1: why does the upgrade lose support with both 3.1.2 and 3.1.4?

For what its worth, I have a separate post going about where USB support starts to have problems on a xp host with xp guests when upgrading from 3.1.2 to 3.1.4. Some other people have posted their experiences in that post also. Feel free to add yours to that list if you want.
