Windows 2000 SP4 install failing on VB 3.1.4-57640_Ubuntu_ja

Post by mdlueck »

I am trying to build a new VM of Windows 2000 with SP4 from a volume license CD ISO image. It gets nearly done with the GUI installation (Asks all of the questions), then reboots before the GUI install finishes.

Host OS is Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit
Version of VB is 3.1.4-57640_Ubuntu_jaunty

I installed successfully on some prior release of VB, and an update did get installed for VB some time ago. I suspect that update has broken something.

I was using an all defaults virtual hardware configuration. I adjusted the NIC to a "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop" instead of the "AMD PCnet-FAST III" and then the installation finished, however it does not seem to have installed networking as the Win2K CD did not come with an Intel Pro/1000 driver... so might not be truly comparing apples to apples.

Suggestions anyone?

IIRC it may have the Intel Pro/1000 MT server drivers. Other than that you would need to have the proper drivers from Intel to give to Windows and then your network should work.

Understood about adding drivers. I noted that Win2KPro did not have the driver more as a difference in installation path. The installation skipped all of the network related questions when I successfully installed with the Intel virtual NIC selected. Thus I anticipate part of the installation process was bypassed, and possibly that is why it was successful. It is not a problem for me to add a driver! :D
