I'm unable to connect my HTC Hero (an android based phone) to a running Windows VM using USB
Every time I get the same problem. The phone won't appear in the guest OS (either as USB storage device or using HTC sync). I am able to mount a seperate USB flash drive with no problems.
Virtualbox: 3.1.4
Host OS: OS X 10.6.2
Guest OS's tried: Windows XP SP3 32bit and Windows 7 64bit
I've tried USB hubs version 1 & 2 and I've tried broad and narrow filters in the port settings. I've also tried no filters and connecting the device using the Devices: USB Devices menu, but the phone is always greyed out. I've tried rebooting the guest(s).
I'm using the latest version of the HTC sync software (but I suspect the problem is at a much lower level so I'll ignore this).
It seems like OS X isn't letting go of the device, perhaps because it appears in some way as multiple devices (though System Profiler doesn't show multiple devices).
I note the following bug which sounds rather similar, and which recommends downgrading to 3.1.2, but I've just upgraded in the hope of resolving this very issue.

Anyone got any other ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Peter.

Re: Mac OS X USB HTC Hero fails
Had the same with Linux (Kubuntu) as host on another system, I think this issue is related to the HTC Sync Software autodetect feature.
I tested with my old SE P1i too and it was not detected.
But funny, I am not alone, Hero as Mobile and a MAC as computer.
