A few days ago I upgrade to virtualBox 3.1.4 on my Linux system (Ununtu 8.04). For a long time almost everything at my guest virtual machines, w2k, xp and vista worked fine, including the sound devices. But by upgrading to ver 3.1.4 the sound devices don't work any more. As before, I use the host audio driver PulseAudio and the audio controller IHC AC97.
This problem may be related to the VirtualBox host system, I'm not sure.
Suggestions?

I upgraded with not sound problems. Are you sure the sound is not muted or turned down in the host?
Did you install the pulse audio in 8.10? From what I remember it used alsa by default.

Thanks Perryg!
But no, I do have the sound enabled in the host, btw Ubuntu 8.04 LTV.
Nothing is muted by user choise.
And PulseAudio, Alsa, are installed in the host as well as Null and OSS.
I havn't changed anything, just upgraded.
Unfortunately the malfunction seems to be caused by the new upgrade.
I'm quite confused...

Re: Sound devices don't work after upgrading to ver 3.1.4
Hi guys,
I've got the same problem...
I am using pulseaudio and Virtualbox 3.1.4 and can't hear anything. Alsa-Sount is choppy. Downgrading to 3.1.2 makes pulseaudio work but then there is the problem with the delays.
My system: Debian Lenny Host and Win XP Guest
Any idea?!?
Thanks, Michael

Same problem here. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04. I get no sound with either my Vista32 guest, or my XP guest. Nothing is muted in either, and all devices are reported as working in device manager.

Managed to sort it. I had been using the Pulse audio driver up until now. Changing to the alsa audio driver brought my sound back. Don't know why, but it worked

Thak you Peasantmk2, I follow your advise, choosing Alsa driver, and the sounds came back!
In fact I tested this change earlier, but made the elementary analysis error, testing more than one parameter simultaneusly,
Goodiegoodie!
