Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config on Mac doesn't install

I have not tried everything yet but I followed the guest additions instructions here exactly on my Mac and it seems to work fine. It goes to full screen with no difficulty.

I will point out that when I tried to do the install and requested 2 cpus and high memory the ubuntu installer just hung at 44% of the install. I tried it multiple times before resorting to 1 cpu and 512 memory. I will play around with the settings now that I have a good install and see what happens but I at least wanted to report one example of success with the instructions given on this thread.

I just remembered one thing I changed
type apt-get upgrade <press enter>
yielded unmet dependancies. I should have saved what it said but did not. My recollection was that gcc depended upon some ubuntu build (1.8?) and it found a newer one (1.9??). Anyway I took the suggestion of appending a -f flag and it worked and I followed the rest of the instructions without errors.

One other thing. I have not yet updated my vbox (running 3.08). Not sure if that makes a difference? Should I update?

You can update to version 3.0.12 from here http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.0.12/ if you don't want to uninstall first.
If you want the latest and greatest then you can get it from here http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads but version 3.1.x was a major upgrade and you would first need to uninstall the current version before you install the new one. You settings and virtual machines would be saved and it should pick them up but I always suggest making a backup first because things do go wrong from time to time. Don't forget to update the guest additions if you decide to go to a newer version.

I followed the tutorial to the letter, too.
I haven't had time to work through the USB & file sharing but I will start now. Perryg posted some info on that.
As of now, the only hardware issue I have is audio but, oddly, it seems better the more I use it. I was wondering if we could compare our VB Settings? Here are mine. Other than audio & folder sharing all seems solid.

In setup for install it didn't recommend 2 processors. Apparently, 3D Acceleration was causing most of my issues mentioned in previous post. When I was setting VB up before installing, 3D was recommended for optimization. Go figure!

Mine is still pretty vanilla. When I did the install I took all the defaults but since then I have enabled the 3D acceleration and upped the video memory to 64MB (was at 12 and no acceleration when I did the install). My mac is also dual boot so I am going to go and try to compare the performance of this to the native ubuntu boot to get a sense of how much is lost through the vbox interface.

I am also not sure if I stress audio enough to know if it is behaving badly. I do notice on login the
ubuntu "chimes/song" is a bit garbled.

synthetic sound test of going to vimeo and playing Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" played as well as it plays on the native mac. If you have tougher tests you can recommend I could try them to see if I have the same troubles you report.

Now, how could Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" sound bad?
For what I need Ubuntu for, sound isn't a big deal. The only reason I took note is while installing 9.10 32bit the first time there were lots of issues, so out of curiosity, I installed 8.04 went great. Sound is perfect. Working with Perryg, I reinstalled 9.10 finally, after turning off 3D, got it working, with the exception of audio, as good as 8.04. It's not a big deal.
I haven't got file sharing or USB to read which was a piece of cake with XP. I see that you don't have those connected.
