Virtualbox crashes loading W7 or XP on I7 imacs

Post by rowgod »

Seems there is a driver mismatch somewhere , my guess the Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse on newer 27 " i7 quad core imacs. Running virtual box no issues with W7 on Vista. Error happens when im creating a new bootable disk and once the W7 or XP disk finishes and goes for its reboot, it takes down the whole Imac. Any ideas here? I have tried taking the disk out as well. thanks in advance, error codes printed below

Im getting this error code pointing towards virtualbox:

Here is the Panic Report that goes to apple:

Re: Virtualbox crashes loading W7 or XP on I7 imacs

Post by tpierry »

The same thing is occurring on my i7 iMac. I had an existing Windows XP VM and after installing VB 3.1.4 any attempt to boot Windows XP brings OS X crashing down hard. This has nothing to do with using or creating a new bootable disk. It is crashing using a virtual machine already created with the prior version of Virtualbox.

Hi.

The same thing happens with my 27" iMac i5. I can not boot into Win7 images or it takes down the whole of OSX. I cant even run the Win 7 installation CD without it crashing down OSX.

I am using VirtualBox 3.1.4 with OSX 10.6.2.

I can run Win7 in VirtualBox on the iMac when I dual boot into Ubuntu and run VirtualBox from there - so it is OSX specific not hardware specific.

not a bad idea for time being until fix available. but if its apple we have to wait for, the Raiders may win a Super Bowl before that happens. I will probably go with the dual boot, but of course the goal is to boot into OSX and then be able to go back and forth without the hassle of booting into a sys. thanks for input

Looks like we all joined to report this.
Running I7 4xduo MacPro and latest 3.1.4 r57640. (Machine does have bluetooth but that is inactive.)
Have previously installed W7 Enterprise 90 day and earlier W7 pre-releases with no problem. Those still run OK.
This is the first time I've tried install from proper W7 DVD (albeit a mounted image). I'm optimistic the good folk at Virtualbox will fix this real soon. Meanwhile, I suppose I could try the equivalent on PC with Virtualbox.

Crash analysis available but no doubt it is the same page fault issue as mine is also
at org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv(3.1.4)@0x89bcd000->0x89beffff
.

p.s. it was a struggle to sign up as I managed to register on Virtualbox without getting activate e-mail and had to new-register for forum. I think I'd better delete the other one as it's far too confusing.

MWRMWR,
On a PC, virtualbox works great, no errors, even during install . im running VB running W7 on a Vista machine. love it. just the mac version is killing me on the install of WinX systems.

This a problem (i7 and 3.1.4) that I solved by using version 3.1.2 of virtualbox. It seems that whatever Sun did for 3.1.4 broke it for use with the i7 and XP.

I've the same problem with Mac OS X Snow Leopard host and Windows XP SP3 guest VM.
My iMac is also the 27inch model Core i7. Is it happening with other guest VMs like Solaris or Linux?

All,
I purchased Parallels 5 and loaded WIN 7 Ultimate with no problems. Then I saw the post about using the slightly older version of Virtual box, downloaded the 3.1.2 version and it works fine with Server 2008. bottom line, either get the previous version of virtual box or purchase parallels for about $84 bucks. they run very fast with the i7.
