Guest locks up when I visit secure site

Post by ffoulks »

I created a guest box for the specific purpose of isolating my interactions with my bank. Unfortunately, when I visit my bank's secure website, the the guest locks up. I need to know why this happens, and what I can do to prevent it.

I was told that I must start a new tread about this topic. The people who responded to me on the original thread seemed to have dificulty in understanding what the problem is. For example, someone said that he had no idea what I meant when I said that the guest box locks up. To avoid such misunderstandings, I have written a posting that describes my problem in excruciating detail. This is probably unnecesary; but please bear with me:

As I said, when I attempt to visit my bank's sercure web site in the guest, while I am logging on, or very shortly after I log on, my guest box locks up. What do I mean when I way the guest locks up?

When I encounter this situation, the guest stops accepting input. . When I press a key within the guest, nothing happens. When I click or move the mouse within the guest , nothing happens. It is impossible for me to do anything at all within the box. This is what I mean when I say that the box is locked up.

Nor is it not possible for me to 'Send the shutdown signal', because when I click on the 'x' and select to 'Send the shutdown signal,' and then click on the 'OK' button, nothing happens. Nothing at all. The only thing that it is possible to do when guest box is locked up in the way that I have described above is to click on the 'x', select 'Power off' and click the 'OK' button. That is the only thing that has the slightest effect at all. I understand that powering off before shutting down is not generally a good practice; but it is all I can do.

When I visit the site of my bank using the host, the host and the site behave completely normally. I can go about my business and log out from the site completely normally. There is no problem when I visit my bank's site from the host. The situation I have described above happens only when I try to access my bank's site through the guest.

What I need to know is why, when I attempt to visit my bank's secure site through the guest, the guest invariably locks up in the manner I have described above. Then I need to know what can be done to prevent the guest from locking up in the way that I have described above when I attempt to visit my bank's site through the guest.

OK A couple of things that we need and need to know.
  • (1) We need the guests log file just after a lockup. This is located in the VBox main program under machine and show log. Post (as an attachment)
    (2) What is the type of network on the guest? NAT, Bridged, ..Etc.
    (3) Are you running any 3rd party security software and what? virus software, VPN, etc...
    (4) does the lockup occur as soon as you enter the site or is it after you supply the logon and password?
    (5) Is there any special security device being used to log on to the site? USB key fob..Etc.
    (6) Is this with a particular browser like IE? Can you try a different browser and does the secure site require any special browser?

I am running win 7 guest w/xp host laptop and had the exact same problem. Another note, it froze when I tried downloading firefox 4 times. So, I downloaded it with my xp and shared the folder with the guest and installed it that way...now, I can get on to my banks site. weird, but now I know. Thanks.

PS. Re: banks; It locked up about 2 or 3 pages in - after logging in.
Re: firefox; it locked up during the download process @ seemingly random times.
I'm good w/firefox, though
