Network absurdly slow host->guest, everyone else is fine

Running virutalbox 3.1.2, Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit, with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) as guest. Current network setting is Bridged, using the "PCnet-FAST III" adapter type (actual hardware is Broadcom NetXtremet 57xx Gigabit).

Doing some web development with Ubuntu. Trying to access the site from my host computer (where most of the development takes place) is absurdly slow - I'm talking 3-5 minutes to load maybe 200K. If I access the site directly from the guest, using localhost, it's snappy (~1sec). If I try using the actual ip from the guest, (a 10.100.*.*) it works fine too.

A coworker on the same subnet can pull the site up no problems (1-2secs).

What is going on here? I tried changing between bridged/nat/host only, also changing between the different adapter types (I tried all of them), and they all have the same problem. It is possible this problem didn't start until my 3.1.2 upgrade, but I can't confirm (to much time passed between the upgrade and
trying to hit the website that was being hosted, plus I don't remember which older version of VB I was using anyway).

Any suggestions?

EDIT: pinging the guest is snappy (<1ms), but http requests not so much.

Since the IP address works fine I assume you mean you have a hard time using friendly names.
Have you tried adding this to the hosts file on the host computer?

I don't have any problem with friendly names - I don't mind having to put 10.100.101.20 into the ip address. The problem is that when making this request from the host computer, it takes eons to load, but making the request from anywhere else (including the guest, or another system on our subnet), things are snappy and fine.

Humm.
I can't seem to replicate this on any of my systems.
Since the guest is still using the hosts NIC to make it out to the network there must be something that is bottle-necking it on the host.
Have you tried to track the traffic? You did mention that ping works fine so it knows where it is.
Wireshark might show what is going on.
Something else to try and see what happens. Temporarily turn off the Windows hosts firewall and see if it speeds back up.
Any more information that you can provide would make it easier to troubleshoot.
Also is there any 3rd party network aware services running on the host? VPN software, other virus software, ETC.

I have the same problem. VirtualBox 3.2.8.
Windows 7 64 bit Host, Linux Ubuntu 32 bit 10.4 guest running Redmine (http://www.redmine.org) web server. Networks is set to use "PCnet-FAST III (Bridged adapter, Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller).

access from host to guest is extremely slow (loading a simple web page takes ~1 minute). I'm using IP address.
access to the web server from inside guest sometimes is very fast, but sometimes (after reboot, I guess) works extremely slow. looks like a network config issue in VirtualBox/Ubuntu.

I have Trend anti-virus running on the host, but I don't think that's a root cause because guest's speed is slow too sometimes.

Please post the log file for this guest (as an attachment) as well as the hosts configuration.

I am getting same problem. Googled for it and landed here. Registered to this site in hope of some help.

Host = WinXP SP3 w/ VB 3.2.4 (I know ... a little dated ... but I don't think that's the problem).
Guest = Ubuntu 10.04

Network adaptor is bridged. Host=192.168.1.100 Guest=192.168.1.101. Pinging is just fine both ways (1-2 ms).

On host I am running a simple python webserver with >python -m SimpleHTTPServer. Trying to access a "hello world" html file on the host (hardly 1k) from firefox in the guest using "http://192.168.1.100:8000/index.html". Even tried curl. Takes more than a minute to get it or not at all. But I can access the entire world web just fine. I can use vncviewer from my winxp host to control my ubuntu guest just fine. But for some reason, that simple python webserver seems to be hanging. I even tried running the python simpleHTTPserver in my ubuntu and tried to access an index.html file from windows host. Same problem.

Hello, any update? I am having exactly the same issue.
Host: Windows XP SP3
Guest: Ubuntu 10.10

In my case I have NAT configuration with port mirroring. When I try to access the web server running on my guest system from my host, it is extremely slow.

Thanks in advance

Hello, just for the record, in my case the problem had nothing to do with VirtualBox. The cause of the problem was related to my ruby on rails development environment. If anyone has a similar problem, here is the solution:
