Network Stopped Working

Post by kcramer »

Hi, I'm using Virtual Box 3.1.2 on my MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6. I have a Windows 7 guest setup and for a while the networking was working perfectly. I'm not positive what happened but some time recently it stopped working. It may have been when I upgraded to 3.1.2 of Virtual Box.

My laptop (the host) can access the internet without any issues. In the Windows 7 host the network adapter is there. The network adapter settings in VB are set as NAT and I have the adapter set as Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM). Cable connected is checked and it has a random MAC address that it picked.

Windows has the network adapter and says it is working properly but I don't see that it has a proper IP address. It looks self-assigned. The address is 169.254.184.193. In the Network and Sharing Center, it says "Unidentified Network".

Anyone have any ideas? I'm wondering how I can troubleshoot this better. I tried searching here and did not find anything that looked relevant to my issue. I'm wondering what should I look at next. I did check the internal DHCP server and it looks like it has an address of 192.168.56.100 and it giving out all addresses above that except for 255.

I also tried re-install the Guest Additions but that didn't seem to change anything.

Thanks!

Select bridge, save settings, then switch back to NAT, see if that helps.

This sounds similar to my situation.

Hosted on a mac mini (march2009) with OSX 10.6something.

Guest is Debian lenny.

I did not have this problem prior to vbox 3.1.2.

I'm using bridged networking. (My mac mini host is 10.0.0.136 and the debian guest is 10.0.0.137 and normally both are accessible from other machines on my home network.)

Then I find the guest has dropped off the network. It will not respond to ping or to ssh connections from other systems and also will not respond from the host.

I can ssh to the host and do:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage list runningvms
and find Oxford is running.

Then:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage controlvm Oxford savestate
sleep 5
VBoxManage startvm Oxford
and for another few days all is well (can ping and ssh to the guest).

It seems to happen when the guest is idle (typically overnight) but does not happen every night.

I tried it and nothing happened if I just changed it and started the VM. However, I ran it in bridged mode and the networking works again. I may try to figure out what is different.

Same issue here. My debian (Lenny) VMs loose their network sometimes. The VM is still active, but nothing is going though the virtual network card. I have to reboot the VM for the network works again.

I don't think I have the same issue as the other two posters. My network isn't working period in NAT mode. When I start the VM, it cannot connect as I mentioned above. It was working perfectly for a while then suddenly I had issues. Apparently it will work in Bridged mode.

I'm wondering what the difference is that is causing the issue.

Me too...Mac 10.6.2 with VB 3.1.2...and in the last 2 days my networking (NAT, Host-only, bridged) has gone out completely for a 2nd time with me rebooting and changing to try and get it working. Seems to have coincided with the Mac OS Updates that I installed Feb. 2: Security Update 2010-001, Java Update 1 for 10.6, and Airport Client Update 2009-002.

Same here.

Host is snow leopard 10.6.2.

I loaded VB last week. You have a great forum packed with good advice. I hope someday to offer help to others, as well.
The install went fine---Windows XP boots & functions fine. However, I was unable to properly configure any network connections. I was convinced it was something I missed. After reading this thread I'm beginning to feel otherwise.
In Windows XP>Device Manager I notice yellow question marks next to Base System Device, Ethernet Controller & Video Controller(VGA compatible)
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Many thanks,
Mark

Thanks for your quick response.
Do I have to completely uninstall every thing related to VB prior to installing the older version?

I got mine working. I finally just added a total of three adapters in the VB Settings all using Intel PRO/1000 MT: a Host-only, a Bridged, and a NAT. This is an OpenSolaris guest fwiw.

I am still having issues as well. I rolled back from 3.1.4 to 3.1.2 (Guest additions as well) but no luck.

None of the network modes work and I have tried all Intel and PCNet drivers.

I thought it might be related to IPv6 but everything is turned off.

I do have all updates installed for Mac OSX 10.6.2.
