Windows XP install freezes

I am trying to install win-xp to virtualbox-3.1.0-r55467 under Gentoo Linux host. I am using the closed-source version because I will be needing USB support.

The installation process freezes inside the virtual machine during "registering component" phase with 14 minutes left. And the virtualbox process is at 100% CPU usage forever until I close the virtual machine. I tried to disable various hardware: audio, usb, net adaptor, none of which has any effect.

Are you re-using or renaming or importing an existing Windows 2008 setup for your XP_in_box VM? Perhaps create a new VM definition from scratch. (Some of the GuestProperty settings reference Windows 2008)

If that doesn't work, consider:
- Create a bug ticket, including as much info as you can (Register with the link to the top right of that page), or
- Perhaps try: disable IO APIC when installing XP and change the IO APIC and the VM HAL when it has installed (IO APIC guests sometimes have CPU usage problems which are sometimes fixed by installing the Guest Additions, so the procedure is install non-APIC, install GA, change to IO APIC HAL, cross fingers...)

Yes. I thought changing the setting from 2008 to XP would have worked. It does not. Creating a new machine worked.
