unable to start vm if connected to tap1 device

Hello everybody,
I am quite new to VirtualBox and I am having a problem to start a VM of Windows XP after assignen the network card to a tap device on my mac. The error code is unknown error creating VM (VRR_GENERAL_FAILURE) and the detailed error is NS_ERROR_FAILRE (0x80004005).
So the VM is not able to start.
Does anyone has an idea how to solve the problem?
Goal is it to have a VM running which is connected over the tap device to a dynamips routing environment.
