Windows XP will not start in VirtualBox

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a thumb drive attached to my Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook which has Windows XP installed. I want to run Ubuntu by default so have specified boot order as USB, HD, DVD-Rom etc. This works fine. If the thumb drive is attached, the booting options are given to me with Ubuntu at the top. If the thumb drive is not attached, Windows boots up.

VirtualBox has been installed as I don't want to have to restart every time I want to move from Ubuntu to Windows and back again. when I open VirtualBox, select Windows and click start, the VirtualBox window opens and Windows starts up but then freezes and won't go past the initial screen. I have tried altering a few settings but nothing makes any difference. Can anyone offer a suggestion?

Alan.

hey,
few questions:
were you ever able to start the windows xp vm from thumbed ubuntu?
have you gone through the settings and verified everything is in-order?
in your windows xp host, are you able to start the xp vm?

I presume you are booting your Windows partition inside VB using a raw hard disk or raw partition (vmdk file)?
Have you read this?: Howto: Windows XP in both VM and native
