Adding Memory

Just added 8 gigs of memory to my new 21.5" Imac for a total of 12 gig. I am running Virtual Box with Windows 7 and maxed out the memory to 3.5 gig but shortly after starting windows, I get "Unable to allocate and lock memory. The virtual machine will be paused. Please close applications to free up memory or close the vm". After trying different combinations, I can only allocate 2 gig which was what I had it running at originally.
Any ideas?
Thank you

To use >1.5 GB RAM per VM you must run 64-bit Mac kernel on Host.
which kernel you run on Mac ?

Reboot your mac and hold down the 6 and 4 keys together. This will boot the 64 bit kernel.
You can check if it worked by doing Apple -> About this Mac -> More Info -> Software
