max screen res capped after .net framework profile install

mac os x 10.5.7 host
xp sp3 guest (with guest additions)
vb 3.1.2 r56127
i'm trying to use paint.net in vb in fullscreen at my host's resolution (1280x1024).
i've successfully installed and run several other programs on this virtual machine already, including ones that required .net framework 1.
recently i installed paint.net, which required the installation of the .net framework 3.5, which i completed through the paint.net installation prompts. after installing both .net 3.5 and paint.net, the vmachine restarted, and after restart my maximum resolution in xp was capped at 1152x864, even in fullscreen mode. after toggling in and out of fullscreen i was suddenly able, while in fullscreen, to switch to 1280x960 (??). i restarted the vmachine again, then shut down the vmachine and booted it up again, each time only being able to acheive 1280x960.
i had a machine save state from before having installed paint.net et all, so i restored it, and lo and behold the 1280x1024 max resolution had returned. so from there i installed the .net framework 3.5 separately, then ran the paint.net installation after. so far, after installing only .net 3.5 and rebooting, the 1280x1024 resolution is still intact. right now the paint.net installation is installing the ".net framework client profile" which i had previously assumed to be the most current .net framework, as directly after this window paint.net usually proudly declares "paint.net has successfully installed --.net framework 3.5 and --paint.net" ... but this, the ".net framework client profile," must be something different, because it's taking longer than the initial installation of just the .net framework 3.5. (when the framework is in place, installation of paint.net takes less than a minute.)
if i can replicate the error/bug after this second attempt i'll post the results here.
i searched several entries in the vb forum and in google dealing with capped screen resolutions in xp vmachines on various hosts, but didn't find any other entry quite like this, so i thought i'd share. i read one user who has successfully installed and used paint.net in fullscreen, but he didn't specify which resolution he was running at.
