USB-to-COM and USB-to-LPT Howtos needed

I have a Mac OS 10.6.2 Host and a Windows XP Guest.
I want to connect a serial cable and a parallel cable to the guest.
(A) Starting with the USB-to-serial adapter:
I have the adapter running under Mac OS 10.6 (Prolific Driver) - tested with minicom.
What is not working: Using the adapter directly as USB device from Windows XP.
The USB device is recognized as "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3)", but the hardware manager says, that
the device is not working properly (Code 10).
The VirtualBox says, the Prolific Device is caught by the Windows XP, so it should not be an issue of Mac OS 10.6 having a finger on the device?!
I can work around this by using SerialClient an a host pipe.
(B) Working with the USB-to-Parallel Adapter:
I have not yet bought one. Which device (chipset) shall I buy?
How can I get the device to work afterwards?
As VBox is not supporting LPT via something like "ParallelClient", I am at a loss.
From the number of requests, I see, that a lot of people have the same issue: USB is not working, LPT is not supported.
Has anybody got something working like this? If so, how did you do it?
