High CPU usage on windowx XP as guest
Hello,
I have the latest Virtualbox on windows 7 entreprise in my laptop. I installed windows XP SP3 as a guest system.
After I logong to Windows XP and leave the machine for a small amount of time, I can see in my process explorer that Deferred Procedure Call takes up 5%CPU memory which keeps getting high until 40-50%.
I cannot work on my virtual machine since 50% of my CPU is eaten up by this process. Any help?

Re: High CPU usage on windowx XP as guest
People report that disabling the XP (guest) firewall (or using Bridged networkin?) helps. I hope this will be fixed in a future version of VirtualBox.

ok i take that back; the kernel module problem was my own fault, virtualbox seems to run perfectly except for the high cpu usage when running videos. i don't mean to hijack this thread bit since we seem to have similar problems i thought it would be a good idea to post here.
oh.. and im running Ubuntu Karmic host and Windows XP Guest.

Re: High CPU usage on windowx XP as guest
Try one of these:
- Make sure you have the Guest Additions installed (there is a known problem with multi-processor guests which is sometimes fixed by a Guest Addition workaround: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4392)
- Reconfigure your XP
hostOOPS GUEST to use only one CPU: the non-IO APIC HAL.
Google for HALu for a program to change the XP HAL, and change it to 'Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC'

well i'm running on a single core cpu atm, the guest additions are always the first thing i install, lastly IO APIC was already disabled.

VirtualBox 3.1.4 has fixed the high CPU / firewall problem (allegedly).
Other than that, I don't know.

I have this problem too, host Ubuntu 10.04 x64, I have another Ubuntu as a VM, that's fine. I have a WinXP, and that is having my q6600 @ 3.6 ghz to 100% cpu usage doing nothing.

Re: High CPU usage on windowx XP as guest
Hello
First, my english may not be enough good, excuse me.
I have a virtual machine running on Windows 7, guest is Windows 2003 server.
This machine has a big virtual machine system disc and it can be run with Vmware 7.X and Virtualbox (3.2.10.)
When I use this machine with Virtualbox, sometimes Deferred Procedure Call (DPC) beginning and it is being very very slow, (cpu load seem at task manager like saw teeth, it jumps) and I must restart it.
Virtual Box :
- 2D-3D vide acceleration is disabled.
- Networking is bridged.
For that reason now I am running same virtual machine with Vmware and problem not seen. Before I was using Virtual Box 3.2.8 and older versions. I do not remember good but I think DPC started with 3.2.X .
Is this a bug ? And why so little count peoples complains with this ?
Thanks.
