When I try to read the first disk of windows 3.1 on the a: drive vm gives the following message on the black windows 3.1 screen
"non-system disk or disk error replace and press any key when ready."

what do I need to do

Windows 3.1 needs an installed DOS!
You can't boot from a Win 3.x Disc.
