Recording very choppy audio in Windows XP

Host: Windows XP SP2
Guest: Windows XP SP2
virtualbox 3.1.2 (not sure about the OSE type requested during registration)

The subject pretty much explains itself. In guest Audio settings, I selected
"Enable Audio" checkbox,
Windows DirectSound host audio driver,
and ICH AC97 audio controller.

My ultimate goal is recording screencasts (with live audio) in Camtasia, and right now the audio is extremely grainy and choppy--video is great. I think I have verified the problem as the input by using Sound Recorder and playing the .wav file on another computer with equally grainy playback. The microphone (stereo, not USB) only sends input to virtualbox when I have "Microphone" selected in the host OS.

Please let me know if you need additional info, and thanks in advance!

bump?

Am I posting in the wrong forum? I've searched the site, and nothing solves my specific problem. Should I post in Windows Hosts section?

Thanks in advance!

Audio is nice to have, nothing else.

Its not comparable to native hardware access.
