Win 98 SE with 16-bit colors ?

Post by alineduard »

Hi,

I've managed to install Win 98 SE guest on XP host (SP3). I could install many drivers but those permitting to switch to 256 or 16 bit colors. I somehow managed to get the vbemp9x archive on the net, all the links I've found in some posts on the forum were broken - by the way, if someone needs it, I can post the address: sounds like a Polish or Czech site (maybe I'm wrong about that language, sorry if it is the case). Well, I've tried to install some of the drivers, but I always receive an error message.
I know this is not about my Nvidia host card. But how can I change the PCI VGA adapter on the guest system ? Is it possible to install a virtual card ? Do I need to download an SVGA.exe ? I've read about some problems that occur after you install this.

By the way, the PCI System Peripheral and the PCI Universal Serial Bus devices are marked as "unknown" (yellow ?) in the Device Manager. Does it have something to do with the problem I am experiencing ?

Please help ! Thanks in advance

Try the Windows 98 drivers at the bottom of this page http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/User_FAQ

Magic :D

Many thanks ! But what about the PCI devices still marked as "unknown" ? They do not seem to affect the performance.

Anyway, thanks a lot again.

Probably the USB devices and I don't think that 98 even had those. (IIRC)
If it is working I would not worry about it.

All but one unknown device can be configured/removed.

The VirtualBox Guest Service device PCI System Peripheral (Vendor ID 0x80EE Device ID 0xcafe).

The other devices are:-

1) Advanced Power Management support can be removed by disabling IO APIC in the VM System/Motherboard settings.
2) If the USB controller is enabled in the VM you should have support from the Win 98 SE installation CD for a Standard OpenHCI USB Host Controller and a USB Root Hub.
3) The USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller (shown as a 2nd PCI Universal Serial Bus device) can be disabled in the VM as joysticks etc. will work with the standard USB controller.
4) The Intel Inf Update Utility for 400 series can be used to update the reported features of the emulated Intel 440 chipset.

(After making changes to a VM's settings I find it best to close the VirtualBox GUI and then re-open it to ensure the changes are applied.)

Without a driver the unknown devices are simply unused and, as you've noted, don't effect performance.
