Ubuntu 8.10 Guest

3.1.2 VB

Upgraded to 3.1.2 (from 3.0.1 I believe). Once logged in, Ubuntu Vbox vanishes except for a small box showing a part of the Ubuntu desktop screen in the top left of the host screen. If I uncheck "seamless mode" I get the full window with sliders. I tried to install the guest additions but cannot get it to work. See attachment for error message.
Any ideas?

Shut down the guest and attach the guest additions in the storage area of the settings for the guest.
Start the guest and click on the device tab - install guest additions.

Same problem. I am running in non-seamless mode right now. I get the same error message as before. This is also happening to my WinXP SP3 vb. I have never had this problem. Normally install the guest additions with no problems.

I have re-installed 3.1.2 from scratch and then re-installed the Guest Additions as per above suggestion (I can see the various modules being built - I rebooted the guest). I still have brokenness. I have auto-installed this many times (using the VB auto install feature) and NEVER had this problem before. Here is a list of problems I am having:

1. Cannot activate seamless mode. Screen is relegated to small corner in upper left-hand part of Host screen.
2. Shares do not work.
3. Cannot access Host CDROM

ie. Guest Additions are not working properly.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Installing the guest additions from within the Ubuntu guest also does NOT seem to fix the problem:

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup

I am afraid I don't know what you are talking about. Where does it say that in this topic?
If you feel this is a bug then post a ticket in bugtracker (link is below my post)

Check your signature.

My point was that reading through the forum there are a boatload of problems related to installing guest additions under 3.1.2. There are some general problems with 3.1.2 in my opinion. Normally the upgrade process goes flawlessly. This time is an big exception. I haven't posted a bug because I want to try to take the time to characterize the problem better. Trying to install a guest using 9.10 to see if that might help (from the looks of some of the posts maybe not).

Wow someone actually read my Signature. You would be surprised how many do not.
All of the Mods have something similar because most people do not take the time to read and just pop up here with questions that are covered in the manual.

Anyway most people would not be here if they did not want help and I try to help as many people as I can and I have NEVER said RTFM! That is rude and condescending.

So just to make sure we are on the same page, did you stop the guest. Go to the storage settings of the guest in the VBox Main program and click on the CD/DVD then go to the pull down window and set it to empty? Then start the guest and click on the devices tab and install guest additions? If so does it still give the same message about the CD/DVD being locked?

Look I'm not trying to pick a fight. I just find the signature a bit insulting. Let's drop it. Not worth the electrons. We both made our points. Sorry. How's that?

The problem remains. There are some issues with 3.1.2 and my setup and other setups apparently. I just reinstalled GA on each of my Guests and installed Ubuntu 9.10 and get the same problem. Cannot go into seamless. Going to go back and re-read the release notes and perhaps open a bug.
