I have found a solution for some people who are getting that nasty error message that tells them that virtualbox needs 32 bit colour scheme to run but you are only in 16 bit, even though you check your system and it says 32 bit.
I am running Windows 7 Pro on my main system with Windows XP pro SP2 loading in virtualbox. I tried loading a few games that were not compatible in Windows 7 but ran great with Windows XP. Command and Conquer Renegade was quite problematic, telling me it needed 32 bit colour scheme and I was running 16 bit. The game would not install. After many frustrating hours reading posts and reinstallations, I found out what the problem was.
1. Make sure you install the virtualbox guest additions in SAFE mode.
2. Make sure that your Host system is using 32 bit colour scheme. Windows 7 default colour scheme is 16 bit for whatever reason. If your main system is set to the wrong display setting, you will not be able to set your virtual display settings above these.
