Boot fails for Windows XP after Windows Update attempt

While in a Windows XP SP3 session in VirtualBox 3.1, I got a blue screen while running Windows Update. I then tried to reboot the virtual host, but instead of the Windows boot screen, it went to the VB EFI boot screen, which displayed a list of "Boot failed" messages for EFI devices (not including the virtual disk) and then went into a shell session. I've tried several things to fix this: upgraded VB to 3.1.2, added more virtual memory to the system and graphics, changed the disk from IDE to SATA, but nothing has helped. I have no idea why a "software" error in Windows would prevent the system from trying to boot from disk, and I don't know what else to try in order to troubleshoot. Any ideas?

As it happens, I must have toggled the "Enable EFI" option during troubleshooting, and disabling this option got me booting again ... sorry for the noise!

Well, I thought I was good ... but now I get the attached blue screen on every boot attempt.

There's a Microsoft article about it:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103. Since you had recently upgraded, I would guess the problem is a corrupted boot volume. Hopefully, chkdsk will fix that.
