Virtualbox GUI has stopped working error in dx9 app

Post by boneman1982 »

I went through and install guest additions and in dxdiag it actually passed the test for 8 and 9, but when it gets to the startup screen of Civ IV, it displays the screen but when you start to actually move to click on something the VM crashes with the message, Virtual Box GUI has stopped working. I have reinstalled 3.1.2 as administrator and run as administrator and in the guest additions was installed in Safe mode.

Is there some sort of error log I can pull to what caused the crash?

Host in Windows 7 Ultimate.

Did you install the Guest additions in safe mode?
Also did you install the guest additions again after you installed the game? It says that it includes the directX 9 and this could have over written the ones from VBox.
Keep in mind not all games work well in a virtual environment.

Try running the (simpler) SDL GUI from command line (check the VBox help). I think it relates to D3D a bit differently than the standard GUI.
Browse smoothly with the SmoothWheel extension for Firefox.

I install Guest Additions in safe mode and reinstalled it (again, in safe mode) after I installed everything for the OS. That actually fixed the problems it was experiencing previously (something about an opengl32.dll error). It wouldn't even get to the opening screen whereas now it does, but crashes the VM. Thank you for your replies I will try the SDL mode and report back.
