This caused me a day and a very long night. I hope it will save someone else a nightmare.
New computer, Core i7 with Win7/64 and some very important programs have to be transfered on it. For a start, I have converted the original hd with Win2kSP4 into a vdi and started it on the new computer. Had a lot of BSOD even after mergeing standard IDEs, and other things. Perhaps I can rescue using another Win2k vdi? Transfered a stable one from another computer just to find out: It crashes as often as the converted one.
If found a notice in a closed beta thread (http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... =0#p112053) that gave the one hint I was looking for: Turn off VT-x/AMD-V for Windows2000
That might surprise some people as I use VT-x/AMD-V myself on Mac OS X 10.6 on a Core 2 Duo as a host and Windows2000 as a client. But somehow, with Win7/64 on a Core i7 things change. Turn off VT-x/AMD-V for Windows2000! Tested it several times and I get a bsod when VT-x/AMD-V is activated and a running virtual pc when VT-x/AMD-V is deactivated.
For reference: The BSOD halts either with:
*** Stop: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005,0x8046ACC8,0x00000000,0x00000000)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
or
*** Stop: 0x00000050 (0xF66CD004,0x00000000, 0xF66CD004,0x00000000)
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
