Windows NT issues

Because i need to run two old pieces of software ( I can not find replacements for) I have installed NT4 plus service packs as a guest under virtual box. I have also installed the 'Guest additions'.
Problem 1.
No matter what screen resolution I select and it "tests" ok I click apply and then asked to restart the machine. After the restart the resolution requested has not been applied. Always goes back to 640 by 840 256 colors. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong or how to fix this. I have tried all sorts of combinations but always get the same result.
Problem 2
Every time i start as program to install I get a message:
"program to big to fit in memory"
I have 610 MB base memory and 67MB video memory allocated. have tried some other combinations but get the same result. The setup file is only 93 kb.
I looked at the Autoexec.bat file with notepad but there is nothing in it and i can see no config, sys file. (i wanted to see if emm386.exe and himem.sys were loaded. I need to check if windows NT$ actual uses these files but it was a thing i saw on the web applicable to the message I am getting.
Any idea please.
