Cannot run Halflife2 demo in winxp guest

Hi Guys
I cannot get halflife 2 to run in an xp guest domain under a Snow leopard host. Whenever i click on the hl2 icon or attempt to run via steam it seems to process for a while then simply return back to the windows desktop. At no time does hl2 actually fire up. Ive seen posts that indicate HL2 will run successfully under linux hosts running xp guests.
is there a specific OS X config needed or is anyone aware of where i can find useful logs either hl2 or VB??
These are the config/steps i have taken
Host OS OSX 10.6.2
Macbook pro 2.2 Ghz Core 2 duo
4 gb ram
virtual box v 3.2.1
Guest OS win xp home with 2 gm ram allocated, 1 cpu, 10 gb hard disk
128 mb video memory
3d support enabled and guest additions installed in safe mode
guest OS rebooted and vb restarted
steam installed, hl2 demo downloaded via steam
attempted to run HL2 in offline and on line mode, the result the same, initial processing when clicking on the icon then crash back to desk top
Id dearly love to get this to run to see if this is a viable way to play windows games before shelling out $80 odd on a new game only to discover that it dont work at all
cheers guys
Virtual box is a fantastic product, well done..
