Screen size is wrong for guest OS's

Hello,
I am running Debian GNU/Linux Lenny and Ubuntu 9.0.4 as guest OS's under Mac OS X 10.6.2 on a 13" MacBook with a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor and an Intel GMA 950 graphics processor.
When I launch Debian Lenny, Lenny thinks the monitor size is larger than it is, and the upper portion of the Lenny screen is at the upper left corner of the laptop's display. But, the lower and right hand portions of the Lenny desktop are "off screen".
When I launch Ubuntu 9.0.4, the Ubuntu desktop takes up approximately the center 1/2 of the laptop's screen and around it is just black.
Clearly I have missed some setting or something. Can someone here point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
hussar
