Raw XP guest: Blue screen of death, can't repair

Hi guys. I have windows 7 x64 as host and a partition with XP already working natively. The hard disk is a SATA ST3500418AS. I have followed the wiki guide and read several forum posts. I used a vmdk file that points to the XP partition only in raw mode (it's the first physical partition), installed mergeide natively, created a new hardware profile, enabled IO apic, got RW permissions for the vmdk, etc. It boots, gets to show the loading logo and gets a BSOD, "stop 0x000000b (0xf79f7524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)".
The guide says to boot from an installation CD and repair the installation, but when i do it it doesn't seem to detect any installed windows XP. Just shows my three partitions as empty.
Any ideas? Is it related to XP being unable to handle SATA? Or if it was so it wouldn't boot at all? Or is it that it can't handle the big hardware change? But in that case why the installation CD doesn't find the installed XP?
Help! please!

I've had lots of situations in the "real" world where a system has had the motherboard, cpu, memory, and video changed, with the same hard disk in containing an existing windows installation, and the repair install just wont work. It's when the hardware change is a major one like ram goes from sdram to ddr2, or the cpu manufacturer changes etc.

Sometimes there are bsods and sometimes not, but the end result is that a new install makes it work again. Fortunately that nearly always does not require formatting. I use something like minixp to copy any docs/personal info that will get wiped by windows to a temp directory and then just copy them back afterwards.

Thanks for answering... yes, the howto here in this forum says to install from VM. I was hoping someone to have an alternative to reinstalling, because i have XP already working, with lots of installed apps and stuff... do you say that minixp thing saves the work of doing that all over? I'll research on it.
Anyone else got another idea?

If you need to go down the new install road, then nothing will save you from having to reinstall all your programs. Gotta love that registry.

Minixp boots from cd and will at least give you the opportunity to save everything in the documents and settings directory which gets wiped with a new install.

One other thought I've had, a repair install only works if the cd is the same xp(pro or home) with the same service pack that was in the original installation, regardless of what sp updates have been done since.
