Can't use f8 key to install Windows

Hello
I've installed VBox 3.1.2 on an iMac running Snow Leopard, created a virtual machine and am trying to install XP Home from an original installation CD.
VBox fires up the windows install process, accepts enter to continue, but then requires pressing the F8 key to proceed with the install.
The F8 key only operates in Mac mode, playing iTunes, regardless of whether capture is on or off. "Esc" does operate to abort the install, but I can't find an alternative way to continue it.
Any guidance appreciated and apologies if I haven't been able to find this covered elsewhere in the forums.
