The reason that I'm convinced that it's VM Box related is that it works perfectly on an identically configured PC.

The problem is definitely with the network Adapter.
Newer editions of VirtualBox cheese up the adapter driver for some reason. If networking fails altogether, you need to change the driver to one that is specifically for the hardware. But if you can access the net, then SKIP THIS STEP and go on...
Next, from the VirtualBox window, click Settings. Then click Network in the left side list. Change the "Attached to:" drop-down box to Bridged Adapter. This will prevent issues with ActiveX controls on pages, etc. I have a couple of pages that I have to use as well that use this dumb technology, so it was frustrating getting errors from pages I knew were online.
