Hi all,
I'm trying to get The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (Vanilla, no Addons installed) running in Virtualbox (Mac 10.4 host, Win XP Guest). I can't get it started though - always crashes with the error "Unknown Stencil Mode Format".
There is a tool for the graphic settings, however the graphics card (Virtualbox Video Driver or whatever it's called) doesn't even show up in the menu. The real GPU is an Intel GMA 950 - hardly overpowered, but it should run Morrowind, shouldn't it? I've tried reinstalling the guest additions, didn't work.
Anyway, I suspect it's some kind of driver issue, or maybe there's some kind of workaround. Any ideas?

In general, VMs are not good for gaming. The guest OS will never see the hosts GPU, only the virtualized video card.

Yeah, I know. But I managed to get some other (older) games running, and this post suggest somebody got Morrowind to run:dmcgraw wrote:In general, VMs are not good for gaming. The guest OS will never see the hosts GPU, only the virtualized video card.

Ok, did you install the Guest Additions with 3D enabled and did you install them with Windows XP in Safe Mode?

Yes, just reinstalled them, in safe mode, just to be sure. Still no luck.dmcgraw wrote:Ok, did you install the Guest Additions with 3D enabled and did you install them with Windows XP in Safe Mode?

Morrowind works.

I tested it on VBox 3.0.0

Re: (Gaming) Morrowind does not recognize GPU, crashes
I know this is a bit of an old game, but wanted to see if I could get it working in my Windows XP VM, on my Snow Leopard Mac. I've got it working using recommended settings elsewhere in this forum, but the in-game menus and speech boxes flicker really badly when trying to play. Otherwise the graphics are fine.
Anyone got any ideas why this might be happening and if there is anything I can do about it?

the GMA 950 doesn't even support Opengl 2 properly.
