Hard drive

Post by njasmine »

One more question I have an external hard drive and was wondering if there was any way to use the space on the external hard drive instead of the internal hard drive of my computer. I want windows XP in the virtual box to use its local disk space on my external hard drive.

I hope somebody understands what I'm asking

thank you

So you can use the external hard disk to store the Hard Disk of the Virtual Machine? Possible, but may be slow to use.

Unless you have a really really small computer HD (less than 60GB) it may not be worth it. If you are interested, however, in VB go to File > Preferences (or Ctrl-G) and choose the Default Hard Disk Folder and Default Machine (settings) folder to the external disk.

For example, E:\ (External disk) E:\Virtual Machines\Hard Disks and E:\Virtual Machines\Machines.

It's possible, but performance of external hard drives is usually much slower, and using a removable drive is very dangerous. There have been many reports of corrupted VDI files on these forums which I suspect may have been caused by absent-mindedly unplugging a removable drive while the VM was still running.

Have you considered adding a second internal drive to your PC? That's what I did. I bought a big second drive so I didn't have to worry too much about disk space, performance is great, my primary drive is not as cluttered (easier to back up), and it's much safer. Just make sure you get the correct drive type (IDE vs SATA - modern PCs now mostly use the latter). Seek help from a friend if you are not confident about installing it yourself (though the tasks of initializing the drive etc should be very familiar to you from your VM experience).
