Hi all,
I have some files that I need to install on my windows VM from a thumbdrive.
However, every time I plug it in, it takes me out of the VM and back to my linux desktop.
Thanks for your help.

Re: using thumbdrive on VM
Brett,
Does the drive work in the host?
Try with it plugged in to the host and working, then start the guest and see if you can connect to it.
You do have it turned on in the guest settings right?

Hi Perry,
I can plug my usb drive into my host and it works fine, but nothing on my virtual machine.
I tried what you said and it didn't work.
What next?
Thanks,
Brett

Re: using thumbdrive on VM
Are you using the OSE version of VirtualBox?
The OSE version does not support USB. You will need the PUEL version from virtualbox.org

Hi Perry,
I am running the PUEL version from virtualbox.org. I'm sure it's a setting or something I have wrong, but I can't tell you where.
Thanks,
Brett

.
Do you have other USB devices working in the VM?
Have you seen the stuff in this topic: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=24679

Re: using thumbdrive on VM
I have never had a problem with USB on a Ubuntu host. However it may be something to do with the system I guess. Try setting on the USB enable but not the USB 2.
Also if the host can see it you could setup a shared folder to it (guest additions must be installed) and then map it in Windows.

Hi Perry,
Funny you say that. I ended up setting up a shared folder and just have been using that. That's helpful anyway as I only need one online backup tool to take care of all my data.
Thanks for your help and attention.

Re: using thumbdrive on VM
Hi Brett,
I'm using thumb drives within guests on MacOSX and Linux. For MacOSX, you cannot use VB-3.1.0. You'll have to use VB-3.0.12 (... or older).
For both operating systems, the thumb drive doesn't show up within the guests after physically connecting it to the machine. Instead, it shows up on the host operating system. You have to remove it from the host operating system first (something like "unmount", "umount", "sicher entfernen" - "remove safely?"). Afterwards, it will show up wihtin the USB menue of the VM. Activate it there and it will show up within the guest.
Good luck, Uli
