I think that you are taking a fairly idealistic approach to how computers actually work. Running out of space on the hard disk in Windows is a catastrophic failure, just as a power failure is. There is no graceful shutdown and recovery. It just stops. It IS a disaster. Normal failsafe systems do not operate. Open files may be corrupted. Your .vdi file was open.
